In the Obesity Surgery Center by Laparoscopy, we believe that it is important to define what Morbid Obesity is. Morbid Obesity is a disease that happens when the fat in the body begins to cause complications in our organs, such as having high cholesterol, arthritis, osteoarthritis, heart problems, high triglycerides, thyroid’s disease, asthma, sleep apnea, depression, liver disease, incontinence, and some types of cancer.
A Body Mass Index (BMI) above 40 indicates that an individual is morbidly obese and is therefore a candidate for bariatric surgery. Bariatric Surgery may also be an option for people with a BMI between 30-40 who suffer from life threatening cardiopulmonary problems or diabetes.
The Body Mass Index, also known as the Quetelet index, is the best way to determine if you are a Bariatric surgery candidate. This number indicates the body mass a person has and is determined by a person’s height and weight.
You can see the categories according to your BMI in the following table. It is necessary to mention that this table is for a person who is between 25-34 years of age. For older persons, add 1 point for ever 10 years extra. For example, a 28 BMI is ideal for a 55 year old person.

Several options exist to treat Morbid Obesity. There are very successful surgical procedures in which food ingestion is restricted or the digestive process is interrupted.
In the Obesity Surgery Center by Laparoscopy, we have attended to more than 3,000 patients, applying successful procedures such as the LAPBAND surgery (it restricts food ingestion) and the Gastric Bypass (it interrupts the digestive process).
These surgeries are definitive solutions to your problems of being overweight.
